【比較級？】other than (that)の意味と使い方

other than は正しい英語です。

通常、thanはその前の形容詞にerをつけ、AとBを同じ要素で比較するときに使いますよね。

しかし、other や rather は比較級から派生した語なので than と一緒に文頭や文中で使えます。

other than (that)は、英文を話したり書いたりした最後に、「それ以外は～」とつなげるフレーズとして覚えておくと便利です。

other than (that)の意味です。

「それ以外は」「それを除いて」

で言い換えられます。

例文でみてみましょう。

🔊 Play I don't eat beef. But other than that, I eat anything.
(ビーフはたべません。けれどそれ以外は何でも食べます。)

🔊 Play I don't eat beef. But except that, I eat anything.

🔊 Play Apart from beef, I eat anything.

主にはthatが使われますが、前に続くものが明らかに複数の場合、「them」、「those」、「these」などが使われることもあります。

🔊 Play I don't eat beef, pork and chicken. But other than them, I eat anything.

「～以外にも」「～に加えて」

「B以外にもA」、「Bに加えてA」の意味です。

文脈により「～以外にも」「～に加えて」の意味にもなります。

文頭のOther than (that)

前の文をうけてOther thanが文頭から始まる英文です。

文中のother than (that)

文の途中で使われるother than (that)は文と文をつなぐ接続詞のような役割をします。

先述の文頭のother than thatも前の文を受けているので、ピリオドの後に文頭になるか、カンマのあとの文中になるかだけの違いといえます。

この英文のようにother than の前にbutがよく登場します。

"A other than that, B"の形で「それ以外は～」と反対のことを言うのに多く使われるからです。

rather thanと混同しないよう注意

other thanとrather thanは発音が似ているので混同しがちです。

最初が"o"か"ra"かだけの違いなので、リスニングの際も聞き間違えやすいですね。

でも、意味は少し違うので注意しましょう。

🔊 Play I will eat beef rather than fish.
(魚よりもむしろビーフを食べたいです)

🔊 Play I will eat anything other than fish.
(魚以外は何でも食べます)

比較級以外で他にthanと使える英単語はある？

比較級以外でthanと使えるのは、今回紹介したother than (that)以外にrather thanとmore thanです

これらは、比較級のように同じ要素の大小や強弱を比較するのではなく、異なる要素を比べています。

(彼の功績は才能というより努力によるところが大きい）

また、最近では特にアメリカ人Nativeがdifferent from (～と異なる）の代わりにdifferent thanを使うこともあるようです。

でも、日本の英語テストではdifferent thanを使うと不正解とされる可能性もあるのでdifferent fromとしておいたほうが確実ですよね。
