- rather thanは文頭と文中の両方で使える
- ”A rather than B.”の構文において、AとBはParallel Structure（並列構造）をとる。AとBには、動詞、動名詞、形容詞、副詞、名詞、S+Vが使える
- rather thanは、instead ofやalternativelyで言い換えることができる
would rather thanの使い方
- would rather thanは好みを表し、prefer toで言い換えることができる
- ただし、would ratherは実質的で、prefer toは形式的なニュアンスがある
- 否定は "I would rather not"と最後にnotをつける
- 丁重にお願い・お断りする表現に"I would rather you did(n't) it."がある

文頭にくるRather than
Rather than A, I would B (A～するよりむしろ、B～したい）
例文
Rather than going out and meet them, I would like to stay home and watch a movie.
(外出して彼女たちに会うよりは、むしろ家にいて映画を見たい)
「Aするよりむしろ、Bしたい」の順でメッセージを伝える場合、Rather thanが文頭にきます。

"Rather than"の部分をそのまま"Instead of"に変えればOKですね。

⑤ rather 副詞 than 副詞
副詞の場合
He seemed to have quit the job rather pleasantly than sadly.
(彼は悲しんでというより、むしろ喜んで仕事をやめたようだ)

希望や好みを表す（prefer toで言い換えられる）
比較対象を示す場合は、rather thanの後にthanをつけます。
「AよりもむしろB」と訳されますね。

B： I would rather drink sparkling water than wine. （than wineは省略可能）
※prefer toで言い換える場合
I prefer sparkling water to wine.
例文
A： Sunday afternoon is available.

否定は "I would rather not"
丁寧に自分の考えや気持ちを伝える言い方ですね。

丁重にお願いする"I would rather you did(n't) it."

肯定文
A： Are you going to make a presentation today?（今日はあなたがプレゼンテーションする？）
B： I would rather you did it. (いいえ。あたなたやってくれたらいいのですが）
否定文
